Democracy: Ancient Perspectives – Modern Challenges
  • Description
  • From Ancient Athens to the Digital Age, democracy is a fluid concept made up of various applications, methods and institutions, and its transformation is ongoing. The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with the basic aspects of democracy, combining its historical development with modern challenges. How and why early democracy emerged, how modern democracy evolved, and what this history teaches us about the future? The course explores democracy from a philosophical perspective, and places special emphasis on the intercultural character of modern discussions on democracy. A range of contemporary issues will also be examined, such as whether the world is currently in the midst of a democratic recession and whether democracy can survive and evolve in a sociopolitical landscape ruled by algorithms.
